Dear Parents and Carers

Thousands of school students across the nation, and their parents, are currently getting ready for dressing up for book week (19-25 August). I am sure there will be plenty of stress about who is wearing what, costumes not being exactly like the book, and whether costumes need props/appendages. This is at least my family’s annual pain – hopefully your experiences have been easier! While dressing up for book week can be a stressful experience for some, research tells us that reading books can be good for your health!

I have attached to this week’s communications a short research article that you may find interesting as it provides a basic overview of the research on the value of reading. I will include the general findings paragraph here because it is short:

Reading is a most beneficial exercise for our brain and mind as it could help the human brain perform all its functions as properly as possible. When people read on a regular basis, they force their minds to think more; as a result, it enables reader to be more insightful. It should be noted that reading is a complex process during which, we use both hemispheres of the brain. At the same time, the Corpus Callosum, which is the tissue that connects the two hemispheres, is activated. Thereby, it contributes to a better exchange of information between them. Reading can be beneficial even for the respiratory or cardiovascular system owing to the fact that it activates the frontal lobe, from which all the automatic functions of the body, such as breathing or the heart function, depend on (Kourkouta, L. et al, 2018).

I could wax lyrical about the significant social and cognitive values of reading – but for this week, spend a moment to consider that reading can be good for your health. So, grab a good book and encourage your child/ren when you see them reading!

Bush Dance

On Friday the 11th of August the College is hosting a Bush dance. Proceeds of this event will be going towards our Year 9 service trip to Chinchilla and more specifically Drought Angels. On the evening we have two sessions one for our Junior School Community from 6:30pm - 7:30pm and one for our Middle and Senior School Community from 7:40pm - 8:30pm. If there are families with students across these sectors they are welcome to all attend a single session to enjoy the evening as a family. We are very fortunate to have the very experienced and enthusiastic Beefa's Bush Band performing and hosting this event for us. Please note that there will be food and drinks on sale and a photo booth on the night to take some memorable pictures of friends and family.

Father's Day Movie Night

On Friday the 25th of August the College is hosting an Outdoor Movie Night we are inviting families to join us to view the original Toy Story film. All proceeds from the evening will go towards supporting our Children of Compassion that each year level sponsors. On the night we will have food and drinks for purchase and there will be fun and games for the whole family to enjoy before the movie begins. Although this event is titled as a Father's Day event we encourage the whole family to attend and enjoy the evening with us. Please remember to bring your own picnic blanket or chairs to enjoy the movie with us.

Good News Week

Get ready for Good News Week at Calvary next week! It's all about being and bringing the Good News to our school community. Each day, there will be exciting events at the Pavilion, organized by students, for students. Don't miss out on the fun and positivity!

Calvary's Got Talent

At the end of term, we want to see what talent Calvary has to offer! Mr Gibson is looking for entries into Calvary's got talent which will be taking place on the 15 September 2023 on the last day of Term 3. If you can sing, dance, perform magic, or have another skill that can entertain while being suitable for children to watch, you can enter! Please send an email to Mr Gibson for the details of the Flipgrid entry by Friday the 1st of September 2023 to enter. If any Y9 students want to enter they can submit a video entry as they will be travelling back from Chinchilla at this time.

The best part is that there are cash prizes up for grabs!

Terms and conditions:

  • The performance needs to be between 1-5 minutes long.
  • If you enter the competition you agree to your performance being posted on the Calvary Middle and Senior School Facebook group.
  • Your performance should be appropriate for children - you won't be considered eligible for entry with something that cannot be shown to the wider school community.
