Dear Parents and Carers

I have been speaking to a number of our students this week about the amount of screen time they engage in across the week. It’s very high for many of our students. I know we spend a lot of time chatting to everyone about this, but I would encourage all our students, parents and carers to have a read of the guidelines and research on this by the Australian Government: https://aifs.gov.au/resources/short-articles/too-much-time-screens

One of the issues I have been speaking to students about is the amount of time they are watching very short video clips like YouTube Shorts or TikTok. These can be very addictive and stimulating and I would encourage students to put a timer on with an alarm so they recognise how much time is passing as they watch short videos. An addiction to watching short videos, doomscrolling, etc., can lead to attention span issues and struggles to maintain focus in class too.

Appropriate screen time usage is a family decision, but it is definitely worth having ongoing decisions about how much time we should allocate to screens.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will occur between 13-18 March. Please click on the button below for more information.
