Missions

Amnesty International

Amnesty International is an independent worldwide Human Rights movement working impartially for the release of all prisoners of conscience, fair and prompt trials for political prisoners, and an end to torture and execution.

At Calvary we embrace the scripture ‘The King will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”’ (Matthew 25:40) and to this end we aim to raise our students with a strong sense of social justice and an awareness of the responsibility we each have to care for others.

This group uses letters, petitions and the media to voice concern about injustice and to take action where possible. The Amnesty Candlelight service in Term Four is a highlight for the group as they share with the whole school community the work that Amnesty has done locally and internationally.

Vanuatu Mission Trip

Mission is an integral part of life at Calvary Christian College. Since 2005 the College has been conducting mission trips to the islands of Vava’u in the Kingdom of Tonga. As of 2016, Mission trips are now being conducted to Vanuatu. Students from the Middle and Senior Schools as well as staff members have the opportunity to participate in these trips. Students who participate in the trip find it a life changing experience as they see firsthand what it means to live in a Third World country such as Vanuatu.

The Biblical basis for our Mission trips is found in 1 John 3: 16, 17 (NIV):

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?”

These verses are at the heart of our mission and cultural trips as opportunity is provided for us to give to those who do not have the same facilities and/or equipment that we do. In doing this, we are able to share the love of God. The trips also provide opportunity for our students to share their faith in Jesus Christ with others.

Student trips:

Since establishing mission trips, the Calvary Christian College community has been able to make a positive difference in very practical ways. Currently, we work closely with the Library Project which aims to place a library in every Primary School in Vanuatu. We have been able to supply them with much needed resources and books.

Staff trips:

Calvary teachers conduct professional development seminars to Primary School teachers. Staff also support the Library Project through equipping teachers with literacy skills.

Celebrating Mission to Vanuatu:

As a Christian College we are thrilled to be able to minister to the people of Vanuatu through this mission program. If you are interested in being a part of the mission trips to Vanuatu or would like more information please contact Jim Haak at Jim Haak <jim.haak@calvarycc.qld.edu.au>
