Recently, the Calvary farm welcomed two new additions but they are not lambs, they are two alpacas named Ghost and Peri-Peri. They arrived on the Tuesday 23 August and are adjusting well to their new surroundings.
Contrary to popular belief, alpacas are intelligent and friendly animals who will only spit and kick if they sense a threat. As a result, we will spend a lot of time helping them feel comfortable around large groups and unfamiliar environments so that they can become a valuable and loved part of our Agricultural Science program.
On our farm, they will be used to protect our sheep from external threats, such as foxes, and to educate students about different types of livestock. With a bit of space and some lucerne bribes, they should soon settle in well and start working with our students.
